The course “Transdisciplinary Approach to Zero Hunger” familiarized students with the concept of transdisciplinarity and the need to approach zero hunger – ensuring equal access to sustainable, healthy diets for all – as a multifaceted problem. Students learned that achieving zero hunger requires a collective effort involving various disciplines and stakeholders. The curriculum emphasized the importance of research followed by action, including policies, legislation, and professional practice, to address these complex issues.
Students studied zero hunger through the lens of the 4D food security framework. This framework served as the foundation of the course, illustrating the different fields and dimensions involved in achieving food security for all. The course covered a wide range of topics, including agricultural production, environmental impacts, food consumption and preferences, and human health. It also explored how these dimensions are interconnected and co-evolve.
A significant component of the course involved a field trip, allowing students to observe real-life examples of sustainable food production. They interviewed various stakeholders, providing an opportunity to discuss issues related to food security, such as equitable distribution and the impact of gender. These interactions helped students understand the practical challenges and solutions in achieving zero hunger.
The course employed various active and collaborative learning methods designed to develop essential skills for multidisciplinary professionals. Students engaged in presentations, discussions on assigned topics, and group activities focused on data analysis and synthesis from their field trip. The course also included communication planning to enhance students’ ability to work effectively across disciplines.
